This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like standard biological terror, but within Together exists a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for a decade. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu as of this moment.
