Whenever a major prize-giving event nears, you'll find a demand to include fresh award types to honor unsung work and delight the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition completely in 2014
- Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
